Murphy NC - First Day of Summer

Today June 21st, 2019 is the official first day of Summer! Summer will end on September 23rd and Fall will begin. So everyone already looking forward to football season you only have 93 days & 15 hours to go.

The first day of summer also brings about the summer solstice. The summer solstice is the start of summer. The longest day of the year. There’s a lot going on this June 21. Today marks the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. On that day, the sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer, located at 23.5 degrees north and the Earth’s north pole is tilted furthest towards the sun. The date of the summer solstice varies from year-to-year, landing between June 20-22. June 22 solstices are very rare. The last one was in 1975 and the next one won’t be until 2203.

The June solstice is the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere. People there will experience the shortest day of the year with the least amount of sunlight and the longest night. The solstice also marks the start of astronomical summer, though meteorological seasons with summer from June to August are more commonly used.
