A Little History of Murphy, North Carolina
The town of Murphy is the county seat of Cherokee County and sits at the scenic confluence of the Hiwassee River and the Valley River. Murphy is also known as the westernmost county seat in North Carolina, located roughly 360 miles from the state capital of Raleigh.
Long before European settlement, this region was part of the homeland of the Cherokee people. They called this place Tlanusi-yi, meaning “The Leech Place.” According to Cherokee legend, a giant leech named Tlanusi lived in the river here.
A historic trading route known as the Unicoi Turnpike once passed through this area, connecting Cherokee communities east of the mountains with the “Overhill Towns” in what is now Tennessee.
During the tragic events of the Trail of Tears, the U.S. Army built Fort Butler in Murphy in 1836. The fort served as a collection point where Cherokee people from east of the mountains were held before being forced to travel west toward internment camps at Fort Cass and eventually relocated to what is now Oklahoma.
This history remains an important part of the heritage of the region.
